Yate Youth Café was a joint venture between South Gloucester Council and Yate Town Council. The project was to create a new youth centre with indoor sports facilities, café and a small cinema. The Youth Café was to be used by local residents and charities.
BJP were involved from an early stage in the design, providing thermodynamic modelling of the building and advice on glazing areas. BJP undertook the full design of M&E services including heating, mechanical and natural ventilation, lighting, hot and cold water, fire alarms, data, CCTV, hearing loops and power.
Rooms were to be multipurpose areas that could be used by different members of the community at different times for different purposes. This flexibility was mirrored in the building services, with many rooms having the ability to be both mechanically and naturally ventilated depending on the use. A large air-handling unit was located on the roof, feeding a system of exposed ductwork throughout the building. Specialist lighting was used for a stage in the main café area and external lighting was designed so that art installations could be displayed on the external walls.
The end users decided the final decoration of the Café, opting for primary colours throughout. The finished building is bright, fun and functional.
